New Inspiration for the Nation - an Interview with George Kilpatrick

April 20th, 2009

Success and achievement are the hallmarks of George Kilpatrick’s media career, but not in the way you might expect. George KilpatrickThroughout his work as a producer, host, creator and writer in the fields of radio, television, and documentary film-making, his mission has remained consistent – to uplift his listeners/viewers and inspire them to achieve their own measure of success. Kilpatrick’s intent is to boost those who are looking to mirror their own lives but rarely see the media reflect back images of success in the African American community and other communities of color. And his actions play out that intent as he continues to expand his influence through ongoing television, radio, and film projects.

Kilpatrick’s own reach is extensive, not only in his own community but also the world beyond. As producer/host of the daily live midday television talk show, “Hour CNY” on PBS affiliate WCNY-TV in Syracuse, NY, he interviews the movers and shakers of the Central New York region covering a 19-county area. He is also producer/host of the award-winning series, “Access with George Kilpatrick,” which provides a forum for voices underrepresented in the media; a special seven-part spin-off of the series, “Facing Racism: A Special Access with George Kilpatrick” earned Kilpatrick the 2005 Award for Outstanding Contribution from the Human Rights Commission. Kilpatrick also produces WCNY’s weekly public affairs program, “Central Issues,” and serves as the station’s Director of Community Affairs.

Kilpatrick is equally well-represented on the airwaves of commercial radio in Central New York through his work on Clear Channel affiliate stations. As producer and host of “The George Kilpatrick Show” and host of “Dr. On Call”  on WSYR-AM, he shares perspectives on a variety of local, regional and national issues, and provides health information and wellness education.  His latest endeavor, “New Inspiration for the Nation” on WPHR-FM brings Kilpatrick’s mission front and center as he talks with nationally-recognized guests such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar about success, motivation, and positive role models within the African American community. Kilpatrick serves as host, producer and creator of “New Inspiration” which celebrated its first anniversary last fall.

George’s interview inspired me to try things and be prepared for future opportunities. An example of George being prepared is his rols as a produce on a documentary film called Freedom’s Call. Which is the story of journalist that covered the civil rights movement during the 50’s and 60’s.

Triumph Over every Obstacle.. Jonathan Lewis (Foots)

January 27th, 2009

Jonathan LewisThis is a personal story about a friend of mine. I have known Jonathan Lewis since high school. We where friends and hang buddies, chasing girls and  trying to be cool. We went to parties, high school basketball and football games and all types of social events. It was a special time, we where young and having fun.

During high school, my friend Jonathan (Foots) decided to start using drugs and those drugs ripped his life apart. For more that 20 years Foots battled drug demons, jail and during the process I lost my friend, I thought forever.

But slowly Foots overcame, he learned how to stay clean from drugs and alcohol. He found his faith, he found a beautiful wife (Penny), he is a father, grand pop and mentor and he became an un-qualified success. He has become a role model to many other people that are caught in addiction and incarceration.

Frankly, during our friendship I believed Foots would never get straight but I was wrong. Jonathan is living proof that any obstacle can be overcome, his list of formers (felon, drug addict etc) is formidable but if Foots can overcome all of this surely you can raise above all of your obstacles.

It gives me great pleasure in having a true Black Genius, that has overcome all odds.

The Story of Jonathan (Foots) Lewis, my friend.

LeRoy Clarke - Black Genius Artist & Friend

January 5th, 2009

self05opmirrorForgive me my awe and star worship. LeRoy Clarke is a man I admire and hold in high esteem. LeRoy just termed 70, but still going strong, He  has been blazing trails for years. I have been honored to spend time in his home in Mt. Aripo, Trinidad, sitting on the floor admiring his work. His space in Aripo is sacred, a temple to artistic genius.

LeRoy’s home in Mt Aripo is peaceful, there are painting everywhere (one of my favorites is actually on a porch outside) and you can tell LeRoy is comfortable in Aripo. We stayed for hours talking about everything, LeRoy, his daughter (my godchild) and Paxton, old friends talking comfortably about everything.

I am a proud owner of  a LeRoy Clarke painting but being an owner isn’t quite true. LeRoy’s work defies ownership, he owns every work and the piece is on loan in my home.

Enjoy this celebration of  an artistic icon LeRoy Clarke, my friend  and the video of his recent exhibit at the The National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago and before I forget Happy (belated) Birthday to LeRoy Clarke.

Celebrating African American Success - The Hiram Rhodes Revels Story

November 9th, 2008

I’ve decided that I will dedicate to posts to little known African American success stories and  in honor of President Elect Obama, I want to start with a politician. The Hiram Rhodes Revels Story

Hiram Rhodes Revels was the 1st Black United States Senator. He was elected during Reconstruction when US Senators where elected by the state Senate. Senator Revels served as the Senator for Mississippi for one year from 1870 to 1871.

Senator Revels was born in Fayetteville, NC, his father was a freeman of white and black heritage, his mother was white of Scottish heritage.  He attended numerous church schools after being home schooled.

Senator Revels became an AME minister and worked in many states ending up in Natchez Mississippi. During Reconstruction, Senator Revels was elected alderman in 1868.  As far as anyone can tell Senator Nevels had never voted, never attended a political meeting or made a political speech.

In January 1870, Senator Revels gave a remarkable prayer to the Mississippi Senate. John R Lynch reports that Senator Revels prayer made a profound impression upon all who heard him. It impressed those who heard it that Revels was not only a man of great natural ability but that he was also a man of superior attainments.”

In 1870 Senator Revels was selected by the the Mississippi Senate to fill one of the two seats in the US Senate. That seat had been vacant since the Civil War.

Immediately after his election, Senator Revels was challeged by the Senate Democrats (most blacks where Republicians) about whether it is legal for an African American to be a US Senator. The southern Democrats argued that black men born before the passage of the 14th Amendment where not citizens so they weren’t able to be US Senators.

Revels supporters argued that the Dred Scott decision (this was the basis of the argument that Senator Revels wasn’t a citizen) only applied to full blooded Africans and since Revels was both black and white the Dred Scott Decision didn’t apply.

Senator Revels eventually resigned the Senate and was appointed President of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University).

Senator Revels was an African American success story, the first black US Senator and the 1st Black person in the US Congress.

There are many ironies in this story, Revels was mixed like President Elect Obama and he faced similar challenges. Hope you enjoyed the story.
